John Dowland & Co: the lute ensemble at the English court
|Lynda Sayce||director, treble lute|
|Richard MacKenzie||alto lute|
|Jamie Aker||tenor lute|
|Matthew Nisbet||bass lute|
The English court employed a lute ensemble from 1579 right up until the Civil War, including many leading player-composers, but their actual repertory is completely lost. This is an attempt to recreate it, starting with pieces which every court lutenist would have known – ‘greatest hits’ copied into multiple manuscripts that were arranged at the time for absolutely everything from viol consort to solo cittern. Familiar, much-loved works in very unfamiliar guise, performed here on the only matched lute consort in existence!
