Purcell songs and instrumental music

Three of the most engaging character singers of Purcell (all new to Stour Music) ravish the ear as only Purcell can. The sensual textures and harmonies of ‘Oh fair Cedaria’ and the catchy ‘She loves and she confesses too’ (bass-line borrowed from Monteverdi) are wound around foottapping hornpipes from The Fairy Queen and devastatingly powerful instrumental movements such as ‘Soft Music’ and ‘Dance of the Furies’. An apocalyptic cantata for thundering bass sits alongside a naughty song, and from Purcell’s Odes and Theatre Music, magical ground-bass arias such as ‘Music for a while’.
