First performed in 1691 at the theatre in Dorset Gardens, Purcell’s King Arthur contains some of the composer’s finest and most memorable music –the great Chaconne, Venus’s song ‘Fairest Isle’, the wonderful Passacaglia ‘How happy the lover’, and the Frost Scene, with the Cold Genius’s famous ‘Let me freeze again’ aria, much purloined in recent years as background music for numerous films and TV commercials.
