With the first performance of Athalia in 1733, Handel could be said to have established the English Oratorio. For the libretto, written by Samuel Humphreys, after Racine’s Athalie, Handel composed almost entirely new music, with only a few adaptations, mainly from his Brockes’ Passion and early chamber music.
