Handel’s oratorio Solomon, composed in 1748, is probably best known for its celebrated ‘Arrival of the Queen of Sheba’ at the start of Act III, and her subsequent amazement at the glory and splendour of King Solomon’s court. With a relatively small and diverse cast of characters, it falls to the chorus, as builders and inhabitants of this ‘golden’ city, to emphasise the grandeur and opulence of Solomon’s kingdom.
