Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach stands out prominently in the transition generation that separates his father Johann Sebastian from the full maturity of Haydn’s genius. His setting of the Magnificat is altogether more extrovert than the more familiar one by his illustrious father, with full-blooded choruses and solos demanding great virtuosity. Haydn’s Mass in D minor, written some 50 years later, needs little introduction. Variously known as the Missa in AnĀgustiis, Imperial, Coronation or Nelson Mass, it remains the most ebullient of all Haydn’s masses, and justifiably one of his most popular works.
