The Hidden Genius of Tudor England
Nicholas Ludford (1485–1557) & his contemporaries
Nicholas Ludford still hides in the shadows of his more famous contemporaries, although since The Cardinall’s Musick’s landmark series of recordings from the mid 1990s devoted to his music, we now recognise him as one of the great geniuses of early Tudor England. In this programme, devised to mark the 450th anniversary of Ludford’s death, he is set in the context of his contemporaries – the elder statesman Cornysh, his direct colleagues Fayrfax and Taverner, and the fresh-faced youngsters Tallis and Sheppard.
