The composer Alan Ridout had a long association with Stour Music, writing many pieces especially for the festival. This staged production, performed by pupils from Lenham Primary School, features three of his most successful and appealing works for children.
The Selfish Giant
The Selfish Giant is an opera based on a story by Oscar Wilde. The Giant has a beautiful garden in which nobody is allowed to play. He builds a high wall to keep all children out, then finds that he has also excluded Spring and Summer and must himself live in icy desolation. When he relents and welcomes children into his garden, he finds warmth and happiness and one child who shows him the gift of love.
The Mulberry Bush
The Mulberry Bush – six settings of Eleanor Farjeon poems – gives a special slant to such old games as Ring a ring o’ roses and Postman’s Knock.
Ferdinand
The story of Ferdinand, a Spanish bull of gentle disposition who, when attacked by an angry bee, ends up (briefly) in a bull ring, is told by an actor and a virtuoso violinist.
